Devela Pushes Envelope In Mansion Matchup With Martin
Posted by Strikeforce Press Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. —Twenty-four year old thoroughbred Cory “The One” Devela (9-1) will bid for his eighth consecutive victory when he takes on what is arguably his most dangerous challenge to date, heavy-handed Terry Martin (17-5), in a middleweight (185 lb. limit) contest during Strikeforce’s mixed Martial Arts (MMA) extravaganza at the world-famous Playboy Mansion on Saturday, September 20th.

“I know he’s a short little brick house and a good wrestler, but I’ll have a lot or reach on him and I don’t think anybody’s wrestling compares to mine,” said a confident Devela, who stands 6’2” compared to the 5’8” Martin.  “People underestimate my wrestling.  Joe Riggs did and got thrown because of that.  I’m going to do the same thing to Terry if he wants to wrestle with me.”

It was his victory over Riggs, a certified MMA star, at Strikeforce’s debut card in Tacoma, Washington on February 23rd that gained Devela national recognition.  Locked in close quarters with Riggs, Devela executed a throw that left his opponent on his back, temporarily incapacitated.  The injury prompted Riggs to verbally submit at the 1:22 mark of the first round.

Since being armbarred on June 3, 2004 by Ed “Short Fuse” Herman, the eventual runner-up on season three of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, Devela has not suffered a defeat.  According to the rising star, his surge can be attributed almost entirely to his four years of training under MMA superstar Dennis Hallman.

Neil ‘Goliath’ Grove Makes Fighting Hurt
Posted by Fighting Hurts Press Release

MMA heavyweight sensation, Neil Grove has leant his expertise to a new TV show, which gives novice fighters an opportunity to experience MMA and be trained by some top names in the sport.

Fighting Hurts is the new show from Nuts TV, which will seek to find raw MMA talent and nurture it through an eliminator-style competition, to find the 2008 Fighting Hurts Champion.

Grove is one of the shows official judges and is currently involved in selecting the show’s contestants.

He commented on the selection process: “We had a lot of guys come through the auditions and sent a lot of them home disappointed. Fighting Hurts is about giving people a chance to discover how tough MMA is and showing that this is a talented and very challenging sport, not something for steroid heads and mindless street brawlers”.

A shortlist of 16 fighters will eventually be selected before being put through a rigorous training program, which will involve an army-style boot camp run by MMA stalwart, Ian Freeman, as well as individual master-classes run by top names from different fighting disciplines.

Contestants will be knocked-out of the competition after each episode, based on ability, style and commitment, before the quarter final event, which will see the fighters take each other on for the first time in the octagon. The final will be broadcast live from the Cage Rage Contenders event on 1st October.

Neil Grove added: “We’ve got some great fighting potential in the contestants and they seem well up for the challenge. Many of them have competed well in single disciplines, but I think they’re going to get a shock at how limited their skill is when they start mixing in different forms and disciplines. I think some of them will find it all a bit too much”.

The first episode of Fighting Hurts will air on Nuts TV (now on Freeview Channel 42 and Sky Channel 196) on Wednesday 1st September.

From 4th September Nuts TV will be moving to Sky Channel 196, but will remain on Freeview Channel 42.

Babalu Ready To 'Hunt' Southworth At Playboy Mansion
Posted by Strikeforce Press Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. —Strikeforce World Light Heavyweight (205 lb. limit) Champion Bobby Southworth (9-5) will face the greatest challenge of his nine-year mixed Martial Arts (MMA) career when he puts his belt on the line against superstar Renato “Babalu” Sobral (30-7) at the world-famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Saturday, September 20th.

"He is the protector and I am the hunter,” said the 32-year-old Sobral, a former UFC world championship challenger and Brazilian national wrestling champion.  “I am already in shape and prepared to take it from him.  I want to be the new Strikeforce world champion and , if I could become champion while fighting at a venue like the Playboy Mansion, that would make a good win even better.”

A student of Ruas Vale Tudo, the hybrid combat system created by MMA legend Marco Ruas, Sobral is coming off a convincing, unanimous judges’ decision triumph over Mike Whitehead on July 19th.  The bout marked Sobral’s third straight win, a streak that he kicked off with his second round Submission of David Heath at UFC 74 on August 25, 2007.
